Lafayette College has an opening for a Secretary in the Department of Biology. The department seeks a detail-oriented and self-motivated individual to perform office and secretarial duties. The duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • welcoming “face” of the department;
  • acts as receptionist, responds to inquiries, directs calls and visitors, sorts mail;
  • manages departmental budgets and helps with annual reports;
  • purchases and receives supplies, prepares purchase orders and expense reimbursements;
  • manages the department’s student assistants and their payroll;
  • maintains files, types, photocopies, and other common correspondence for classes;
  • coordinates events and activities, schedules meeting rooms, and catering;
  • organizes field trips, such as ordering and reserving buses;
  • runs on-campus and off-campus administrative errands;
  • helps maintain departmental website;
  • works with all faculty, staff, and students including alums in the department;
  • performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Candidates must have strong computer skills and demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, G Suite (Google Drive, etc.), and PowerPoint. The most competitive candidate will have experience with scheduling, bookkeeping, purchasing and budgeting; be able to generate departmental budget reports; have strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; have a willingness to learn new technology; and have the ability to track and meet deadlines, and to work on a self- directed basis. Prior knowledge of Moodle, Spaces, WordPress, Qualtrics, Banner, Interfolio, and familiarity with biological material/equipment are pluses.
