Supporting the mission of Lafayette College, the Assistant/Associate Dean of Students is a student development educator and a critical member of the Division of Student Life. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Assistant/Associate Dean of Students is a full-time, twelve-month position. Responsibilities include providing direct administration of the student conduct system including restorative practices within and outside of the conduct system, supporting high level cases of student care and success, chairing the Behavioral Intervention Team, managing oversight of the student handbook including policy review and revision, and supporting the overall efforts of the Dean of Students office. The Assistant/Associate Dean of Students supervises the Case Manager.
Responsibilities
● Directs the Student Conduct & Restorative Practices Program
○ Facilitates an educational and restorative conduct process for student growth and healing
○ Ensures the fair and equitable administration of the student conduct process
○ Develops holistic restorative practices approaches across student life and with campus partners
○ Reviews policies and procedures on an ongoing basis
○ Trains and manages professional staff acting as conduct case administrators
○ Recruits and trains student and faculty members of the Student Conduct Board and coordinates board hearings
○ Ensures compliance with all relevant legal standards, staying current on legislation and best practices
○ Acts as primary manager for Maxient software for offices across campus
○ Guides publication of the Student Handbook, including the Code of Conduct and other policy documents
○ Conducts ongoing and annual assessment of student conduct cases, providing summaries and analyzing trends, and making recommendations as-needed
● Student support and intervention
○ Provides guidance and intervention for students in crisis and non-crisis situations including students faced with physical and mental health concerns, financial crisis, family and other personal emergencies, victims of violence, and other barriers to academic success
○ Supervises full-time Case Manager
○ Actively collaborates with partners across the College to support and/or respond to students experiencing difficulties, both on an individual level and systemically
○ Chairs the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)
○ Coordinates annual training for the BIT
○ Conducts ongoing and annual assessment of BIT referrals, providing summaries and analyzing trends, and making recommendations as-needed
● Student Life administration
○ Participates in and/or coordinates crisis response at the institutional and divisional level
■ Coordinates the Student Life on-call schedule
■ Serves as Dean On Call, overseeing the responses of on-call professional staff and following up as appropriate
■ Ensures timely and robust responses to reports filed via the College’s universal reporting form, One Pard
■ Serves on the Incident Action Group (institutional response team)
○ Works with the Vice President for Student Life and the Dean of Students on development and implementation of policies, processes, and procedures relevant to student life and administration of the Student Life area
○ Coordinates/participates in team meetings, assessment efforts, and serves on College-wide committees
○ Works with the Student Life staff to provide quality student-oriented services rooted in assessment and best practices
○ Other duties as assigned Qualifications
The successful candidate must possess a master’s degree in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, or related field, and a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in student affairs (7 years for the Associate Dean appointment) with increasing levels of responsibility (5 years for the Assistant Dean appointment) at the department head-level or higher.
Candidates for this leadership role should have experience in a predominantly residential liberal arts setting. The successful candidate will demonstrate a personal and professional commitment to diversity and inclusion, the ability to work collaboratively across the campus, and the aptitude to build and maintain strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff with an emphasis on dynamic communication and collaboration. They should demonstrate experience with conduct/judicial systems based in restorative practices within higher education, and leadership for crisis/risk management. Other preferred qualifications include supervisory and budgetary experience; planning/organizational skills; experience in leading teams as well as advancing assessment and developing learning outcomes; knowledge of student development theory; knowledge of higher education law, including Title IX; and and an approach that is decidedly developmental, compassionate, just, and performed with integrity.
