Lafayette College is seeking a skilled and dedicated Steam Plant Fireperson to join our Facilities team. The Steam Plant Fireperson will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of steam boilers and related equipment within the campus steam plant along with off-campus properties. The ideal candidate will possess a strong mechanical aptitude, a solid understanding of steam systems, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Fire Monitoring and Response:
a. Monitor steam plant operations, including boilers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.
b. Respond promptly to fire alarms and other emergency situations, taking appropriate actions to mitigate hazards and ensure safety.
2. Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
a. Operate and control steam plant machinery, including boilers, turbines, and generators.
b. Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.
c. Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical issues in a timely manner.
3. Safety and Compliance:
a. Adhere to all safety protocols, environmental regulations, and college policies.
b. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, safety inspections, and incident reports.
c. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to steam plant operations and fire safety.
4. Documentation and Reporting:
a. Maintain detailed logs of equipment performance, maintenance activities, and emergency responses.
b. Prepare and submit reports on plant operations, safety issues, and any incidents.
5. Schedule – works a rotating shift during the heating season (October through May)
6. On call – available during the heating season for the steam plant.
7. All other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each duty. The qualification requirements listed below represent the minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill, and/or ability necessary.

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Requires 5 years of experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting heating systems
  3. Trade school certification preferred

Physical Demands: Must be able to walk, talk, hear, stoop, crawl, climb stairs and lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work indoors or outdoors and be able to evaluate and report on work. Must have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and to talk and hear. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work extended or irregular hours. Possess effective communication, judgmental, planning and human relations skills and will be required to work under periods of stress due to the level of the position responsibility.
