Lafayette College is seeking a skilled and dedicated Steam Plant Mechanic to join our Facilities team. The Steam Plant Mechanic will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of steam boilers and related equipment within the campus
steam plant along with off-campus properties. The ideal candidate will possess a strong mechanical aptitude, a solid understanding of steam systems, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic
environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs on steam boilers, pumps, compressors, and associated equipment to ensure reliable operation.
2. System Operation: Operate and monitor steam boilers and auxiliary systems, including adjusting controls, monitoring gauges, and ensuring safe and efficient operation.
3. Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve mechanical and operational issues, including performing tests and inspections to identify problems and implement effective solutions.
4. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and system performance. Complete required documentation and reports in a timely manner.
5. Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations related to steam plant operations. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
6. Collaboration: Work closely with other facilities staff, including electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians, to coordinate maintenance and repair activities.
7. Inventory Management: Monitor and manage inventory levels of spare parts and supplies necessary for steam plant operations and maintenance.
8. Training: Provide guidance and training to other staff members as needed regarding steam plant operations and safety procedures.
9. Off-Campus Housing – Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all off-campus heating systems.
10. On call – available during the heating season for the steam plant and off-campus properties.
11. All other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience: To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each duty. The qualification requirements listed below represent the minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill, and/or ability necessary.
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Requires 5 years of experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting heating systems.
3. Trade school certification preferred.
Physical Demands: Must be able to walk, talk, hear, stoop, crawl, climb stairs and lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work indoors or outdoors and be able to evaluate and report on work. Must have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and to talk and hear. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work extended or irregular hours. Possess effective communication, judgmental, planning and human relations skills and will be required to work under periods of stress due to the level of the position responsibility.
