The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) is responsible for assisting the Technical Director at Lafayette College in the preparation, organization, and safe execution of scenery, lighting, sound, and projection for a four-show season produced by the Department of Theater. This is a part-time, non-exempt/hourly staff position in the Department of Theater during the academic year (August-May). The ATD should have experience with theatrical set building (or related experience in woodworking, electrical and/or welding), as well as experience with shop tools (e.g., hand tools, power tools, welders and table saw). The ATD must be computer literate, with specific experience with AutoCad/Vectorworks/Sketchup and the Google suite of software programs, and must be able to read drawings/paperwork made by above software. While a high school diploma is required, a BA/BFA or higher is preferred.
The following are the specific duties of the Assistant Technical Director (ATD) at Lafayette:
● Assist in day-to-day operations of the scene shop.
● Read and interpret AutoCAD design drawings to lead construction of theater sets that include wood, metal, and painting.
● Help lead and manage stage rigging, electrical, projection and audio.
● Help maintain scenic, electrical, and audio equipment.
● Organize and maintain a safe and clean shop space.
● Transport, assemble and strike stage scenery for productions.
● Create a positive and safe learning environment for students to build skills and community.
● Effectively teach students safe ways of building, painting, and fabricating sets.
The successful candidate for this position will be a strong communicator and supervisor who can work with students, staff, volunteers, and community members from diverse backgrounds and with varied skill sets. The ATD is expected to foster the growth and development of students and support Lafayette College’s mission and values. The ATD will work both independently and as a contributing member of a team. They are expected to follow safety standards and procedures and set an example for students to do the same. The ATD must be available to work days, as well as some nights and weekends as needed for the theater season; hours will vary depending on the season performance schedule. Skills in the following areas are also desirable, though not required: scenic painting and/or prop, sound or lighting design.
